Estonian winter is an amazing time of year. On one hand, there are long dark nights, cozy Christmas fairs with mulled wine and plenty of ice fields. On the other hand, winter can be a challenge for those who are used to the milder climate of southern countries. Temperatures rarely change and the grey skies can be depressing.
But there is no need to be discouraged! If you have a reliable winter jacket and the right clothing, you will forget about the cold and be able to enjoy nature, travelling with friends and stay healthy. Even more, a bright and varied wardrobe can lift your spirits on the darkest day.
The secret of a good winter jacket
So, what should you look for when choosing a winter jacket in Estonia? The answer is simple: it should be warm, waterproof, windproof, and preferably long - below the hips. Such a jacket will help you to stay warm and feel all the charms of Estonian winter.
When to buy a jacket?
If you come to Estonia in August or September, do not put off buying winter clothes. It is the perfect time for shopping - many shops offer summer discounts of up to 60-80%. Take care of your warmth in advance and save money at the same time!
Where to look for the perfect jacket?
Your choice depends on your budget and preferences, and I'll give you a few tried and tested places where you're sure to find the right one.
A premium department store in the centre of Tallinn, Stockmann offers quality brands for all tastes and wallets. Stockmann offers discounts during the sale season and great deals on brand-name clothing. I recommend stopping by in August and early September when there are big discounts. There is also an outlet corner on each floor, where you can always find things with discounts of up to 80%. Apart from jackets, there are also great accessories for formal suits: shirts, ties and much more.

If you need a comfortable and practical jacket, check out these shops. I especially recommend Rademar in the T1 shopping centre. This is my favourite place where I often find quality clothes and accessories. If you come here in September, you'll definitely get great deals. Sportland has its own outlet shops, and you can find its shops in large shopping centres such as Viru or Ülemiste.
o If you want to buy everything in one place, go to Ülemiste Keskus.
Second hand shops
The most exciting and budget-friendly option for those who like a creative approach to style. Tallinn has many shops where you can find unique vintage pieces as well as everyday clothes. Here are a few popular places:
- Humana: specialises in clothing and accessories, on certain days you can buy any item for just 1 euro. There are plenty of departments around the city.
- Uuskasutuskeskus: you can find everything from clothes to home appliances and furniture. It is the ideal place for those looking for inexpensive but useful items for the home.
- Sõbralt Sõbrale: similar to Uuskasutuskeskus, but the assortment is a bit smaller.
- Paavli Angaar and Punane Ristik: great options for finding clothes and household items. While Paavli Angaar has a wide selection of clothes for all occasions.
By preferring second hand clothes, you can create a unique look for little money, finding quality clothes with history and character. It is an eco-friendly and conscious choice that helps reduce waste, support sustainable consumption and even charity initiatives.
Be careful and don't buy things you don't need, be conscious in your purchases, you not only save money but also make a contribution to the environment, also on the esthetics and style side, use the things you have and fill them with details, this creates your image unique and differentiates you from most other consumers.
Last minute tips
Do not forget that winter is not just about the cold, but also being able to enjoy the simple things: walks in snowy woods, cosy evenings with a cup of tea and ice skating. Good winter clothes will be your main helper and shopping will be an exciting start to the new season. May the Estonian winter bring you warmth in your soul and many bright moments!
