Tucked away in the vibrant city of Tallinn, Estonia, lies a place where nature comes alive: the Tallinn Zoo. It's not just about viewing animals; it's about understanding them, appreciating their beauty, and recognizing the importance of conservation. During my recent visit, I discovered the charm and significance of this place.

Join me as I share my day at the zoo and highlight why it's a spot worth adding to your Tallinn itinerary.

History of Tallinn Zoo

Tallinn Zoo has a rich history dating back to its opening on August 25, 1939. Originally located on the outskirts of Kadriorg Park, the zoo later relocated to Veskimetsa in 1983, where it expanded and flourished. Today, it houses a diverse range of animals, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. Beyond being a spectacle, the zoo is a beacon for conservation, having bred endangered species like the Amur leopard and black rhinoceros. It is currently undergoing modernization, with new exhibits being built to enhance visitors' experiences.

Why visit Tallinn Zoo

One of the main reasons to visit Tallinn Zoo is its educational and conservation efforts. Through its exhibits and activities, the zoo enlightens visitors about wildlife and the environmental challenges they face. By stepping in, you're supporting their conservation efforts, especially for endangered species.

Beyond the noble cause, the zoo promises a delightful experience. You can enjoy captivating animal displays, interactive sessions, and feeding sessions, allowing you to get up close and personal with certain animals. These experiences create a stronger connection with wildlife, fostering a deeper appreciation for their beauty and importance.

Located in the peaceful Veskimetsa neighborhood, Tallinn Zoo provides a tranquil environment surrounded by forests and green areas. It offers a retreat from the city's hustle and bustle, and the picturesque backdrop adds to the overall charm of the zoo. It's a family-friendly destination with amenities for all ages, including educational events, a petting zoo, playgrounds, picnic spots, and more.

My experience

During the visit with my family, I explored numerous exhibitions featuring a wide variety of animal species and attended enthralling animal displays highlighting  seals and birds of prey. I loved the experience of the petting session where you can come so close to real animals and share a close time with them.

Human contact is not allowed in the zoo except for the Children's Zoo, where you can pet goats.

In addition to the diverse mammal and bird species, Tallinn Zoo also houses an array of fascinating reptiles. Encounter the impressive Green Anaconda, one of the largest snakes in the world. I really admired stunning Green Tree Python with its vibrant green coloration. If you're lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of the rare and critically endangered Chinese Alligator.

The tropical rainforest section was a transformative experience! It felt like stepping into a whole new world, immersing myself in the lush greenery and diverse wildlife. The interior design was fantastic, creating a humid climate that made it truly feel like a real rainforest. The presence of an artificial lake and simulated rainfall added to the authenticity of the experience.

As I strolled through the exhibit, the sounds of nature surrounded me, making me feel as if I had ventured into the heart of a distant rainforest. I could hear the calls of exotic birds, the chirping of insects, and even the distant rustling of leaves, which all contributed to a more immersive and authentic encounter with nature.

One of the most remarkable aspects was being able to observe different species up close. The variety of primates swinging gracefully from branch to branch, the vibrant-colored birds soaring above, and the intriguing reptiles and amphibians hidden among the foliage were captivating to watch. Walking through the tropical rainforest section truly provided an unparalleled experience, allowing me to connect with nature on a deeper level. It was an extraordinary adventure that made me feel like a part of the forest itself. The zoo's efforts to create such a natural and awe-inspiring environment were commendable, and I can't wait to revisit this section to experience its wonders again.
